Who Thinks You Are Beautiful?

Being Mommy

Being Mommy

I haven’t felt beautiful in a very long time.

Four pregnancies, three births, multiple complications from those, grief, sickness, stress and the course of life has changed me. It has changed not only how I look, but how I feel about myself and the world around me. The past couple of weeks have been rough. First, I took a bad fall that left me with multiple minor injuries, including a sprained right wrist and jammed fingers. About a week later, I had a freak accident while helping my husband uncock his crossbow after hunting, causing my hand to swell up like a softball instantly. I came home from the ER with pain meds and a brace after three doctors inspected my x-rays and couldn’t find a break. They said I could still have a hidden fracture, and may need follow up x-rays if I don’t heal properly as the swelling fades. I’m currently typing this one handed, feeling far from beautiful.

My children think I am beautiful.

Today- as I was soothing my cranky teething baby girl- my oldest wanted to take my picture. When I asked why, her reply was startling- “Because you are so beautiful, Mommy!”. Since I was wearing the clothes I slept in, have green fingers peeking from an ungainly blue brace and barely combed my hair today, I was curious enough about what she was seeing that I couldn’t to tell her to go ahead. I didn’t feel like posing, so she got just what she saw…me being their mommy. I don’t see physical beauty at all in the photos she took, but when I look at it from her perspective, I see what she was looking at. My daughter saw me loving on her baby sister, and she thought it was beautiful and wanted a picture of her mommy doing what she does.

Sweet baby

Sweet baby

This was a powerful reminder of the truth in the old saying “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder”.

The beauty of a person is often in how you look at her. My daughter didn’t see the tired face. lack of grooming and sloppy clothing I would have zoomed in on had I looked in the mirror. She saw love and nurturing. I see the toll life has taken. She only sees the person who gives her and her siblings love, security and care. When I look at my children, I don’t just see that they are physically adorable (which they obviously are….lol). I see my dreams come true, their giving spirits and all the love their little hearts are overflowing with. I see endless beauty.

Who thinks you are beautiful?

Mommies, I know you often feel ugly and you are hard on yourself. We all get that way now and then, especially when we are struggling like I was when I wrote the poem at that link. Maybe it would help if you saw a glimpse of yourself through the eyes of someone who loves you. It could be your daughter, husband, parents, sister, best friend or the kids you mentor. Who knows? No matter what you look like or how you feel about yourself, someone sees the beauty in you. They see who you are, and they think you- the real, unfiltered, everyday you– are truly beautiful. Let that touch your heart. Maybe it will help you look at the woman in the mirror in a gentler light.

Free Printable Thanksgiving Turkey Craft

Thanksgiving turkey printable

Thanksgiving turkey printable

Getting into the spirit of Thanksgiving crafts?

I’m always sketching fun things for my kiddos to work on, and this time it was a turkey template for them to color and give a festive leafy tail. I sent them out to hunt for pretty leaves for their turkey tails while I quickly sketched a turkey for them to color. I happened to think that if my munchkins were this excited about it, maybe yours would be, too. I usually don’t think of it until after we finish a project, but this time I decided to make it into my first free printable and see how y’all like it. It’s easy peasy, but kept my little ones occupied quite awhile. It got them running through the beautiful autumn outdoors with their grocery bag, hunting for the perfect leaves. Once they were tired of doing that, it gave them something fun to do awhile and finally to display in honor of the upcoming holiday.

Want to make your own Thanksgiving leaf turkey?

First, gather up some leaves. If you don’t have any real leaves available, you can substitute construction paper leaves, feathers or anything else your little imagination can conjure.

Next, have your little artists color those turkeys you printed off and cut it out.

Then glue or tape the leaves to a paper plate in a circular pattern and glue or tape the turkey over where they intersect so it looks like the tail.

Tada!!! Turkey perfection….or close enough to make you smile!

Ready to make your own turkey? Head on over to my link below for your free printable!

It’s simple and unpolished, since it was freehanded with a sharpie originally, but it’s freeeeeee and made for a fun time for us!

What Lung Cancer Can’t Do

Mom & PawPaw, Together in Heaven Now

Mom & PawPaw, Together in Heaven Now

November is Lung Cancer Awareness Month.

My mom- a previously healthy non-smoker- died of lung cancer just before Christmas in 2006  at the young age of 44, a whirlwind two months after her diagnosis. We don’t know what caused her disease, and still don’t understand how such a vibrant, healthy and active woman succumbed to it so rapidly. I’ve learned that dwelling on what cancer has taken from my family and what power it can have over us can be completely soul numbing. Instead of dwelling on what lung cancer can do and what it can rob from us…this month I want to remind myself and others of what lung cancer can’t do.

Lung cancer can steal your voice, but it cannot take the words you have spoken. Choose words of love, encouragement and peace.

Lung cancer can leech away your energy, but it can’t quench your spirit. My mom was still such a caring, curious person all the way to her last breath.

Lung cancer can stop your heart, but it cannot stop the love you have inside of it. Show that love to those you care for.

Lung cancer can zap the strength from your body, but it can’t touch the strength of your soul. Who you are is stronger than cancer.

Lung cancer can take away life from your loved one, but it can never, ever take away the memories, legacy and relationships you have. Those will live on long after you are gone, regardless of whether you are taken by cancer or die in your sleep at the ripe ol’ age of 105.

Cancer doesn’t always win even in the physical realm. Don’t think I am saying it has to take all of these physical things away….but it can. As long as there is light in the eyes and breath in the body, there is hope. There are so many things it cannot reach, though, and we all need to remember that. Don’t give lung cancer- or any cancer- that kind of power over you. That power belongs to us, as humans. The human spirit soars far above and beyond anywhere that any disease can reach.

Never forget. What can you think of that lung cancer can’t take away?

Struggling? You Are Not Alone.

Carrying my baby while I can

Carrying my baby while I can

I have been struggling. I’m struggling with handling life’s bigger problems- like finances and relationships. I’m struggling with my self image after birthing three children and having health issues. I’m struggling with my precious unruly children, teething fussy baby and a moderate dose of post partum depression. I will be okay, but this poem flowed out of all that and more. I felt that maybe someone would benefit from my transparency, although I was hesitant to share this.

♥♥♥

Baby teething, keeps on screaming,

Must have Mommy, and it’s seeming

Like she’ll never let me put her down

Or let me stop carrying her around…

But she will.

♥♥♥

Threenager yelling out so loud,

Waking baby and feeling proud.

Leaving destruction wherever he goes

Hard to imagine he’ll get better as he grows…

But he will.

♥♥♥

Six year old asking questions galore,

When I answer, she wants to know more,

Gives me attitude when she doesn’t understand,

Will she always question every command?

Probably will.

♥♥♥

My head is pounding from the chaos and noise,

My kids drive me crazy, but they’re also such joys.

They tire me out and the work’s never done

Will I miss their neediness as much as the fun?

I think I will.

♥♥♥

Some days I’m discouraged and wonder why

Do I continue to give them my best Mommy try?

Will it matter if I do my best to raise them right,

Or just let them run wild without giving a fight?

I know it will.

♥♥♥

Why am I sharing my struggles with you?

Because I’m not alone, and know this is true.

Most parents struggle and feel they’re not enough,

Does it help to admit I love my children, but it’s tough?

Maybe it will.

♥♥♥

Are you struggling today? What helps you when you are struggling? Two things that help me are writing and shifting my focus to others.

Don’t Cut Your Pumpkins!!

Kiddos With Their Pumpkins

Kiddos With Their Pumpkins

Don’t cut your pumpkins!!!

If you are like me, you don’t look forward to trying to carve pumpkins into jack o’lanterns. In fact, I am totally paranoid about using sharp knives and carving instruments with my little ones. So, to satisfy their desire to decorate pumpkins while keeping my anxieties quiet, we just don’t cut, carve or otherwise mutilate our pumpkins.

Do decorate your pumpkins!

You can do so many things with them without cutting, and they should last all the way until time to decorate for Christmas! I love to do a pumpkin with a thankful theme. My children like to make pumpkins representing themselves. We have also done pumpkins that were just randomly decorated. Be inspired by what you like! I’m more about making fall decorations with my pumpkins and less about making them holiday oriented. Most Halloween themed things don’t pass my rules, anyway, since I don’t allow witches and wickedness in our décor this time of year.

Big Sister Pumpkin

Big Sister Pumpkin

Be creative and have fun!

My kids chose their pumpkins this year. They each chose a small one to represent themselves, and my oldest daughter picked a miniature one to represent their baby sister. They wanted to do their own decorating of their own pumpkins, and to give me ideas of what they wanted me to do for baby sister. 🙂

We used materials we had on hand. My deceased mother in law absolutely adored Halloween, and we wound up with some of her craft supplies. I allowed my kiddos to choose some items from those as part of their pumpkin decorating. We wound up using sequined candy corn and stars, googly eyes, ribbon and paint on the bigger munchkins’ pumpkins in the designs of their choosing and creation. I helped very little, since they were having fun and I wanted them to have pride in creating their own. We used smaller googly eyes, a real piece of candy corn for a nose, raffia and pipe cleaner for the baby’s miniature pumpkin.

Big Brother Pumpkin

Big Brother Pumpkin

Have a safe and happy autumn!!!!

We managed to decorate these with no booboos and minimal stress. My biggest concern was making sure the paint and glue stayed on the newspapers I laid out on the kitchen floor where we were working!

What kind of decorations have you done this fall?

Check out our No Carving Pumpkin Family! I think it’s pretty stinkin’ cute for fall décor!!!

My Favorite Baby Name Sites and Books

Baby Girl

Baby Girl

When we were trying to come up with a name for our third child, I browsed a ton of baby name sites. I thought I’d share my favorites with y’all. They’re in no particular order, since there is something to love about all of them! 🙂

1. http://www.babynames.com/ I love that this site gives the meanings, similar names, popularity ranking and a ton of search options to choose from. It’s super easy to navigate, too, which is a huge plus when you’re suffering from pregnancy brain!

2. http://www.babynamewizard.com/ This site is awesome if you want particular sounds in your child’s name or want to avoid certain sounds you don’t like (i.e. wanting it to start with “Sh” and not to end with “lee” or whatever your little heart desires) or looking for a particular type of name (i.e. Biblical or Jewish or traditional or a variety of other types).

3. http://www.thinkbabynames.com/ One of the neatest features on this site is that you can actually search for names by meaning, which I find totally fascinating and unique. I don’t know about you, but it was extremely important to me that none of my children have negative meanings to their names.

For my older children, I searched online a little, but I mostly went with the conventional baby books. Want to know a few I recommend?

The Complete Book of Baby Names: The Most Names (100,001+), Most Unique Names, Most Idea-Generating Lists (600+) and the Most Help to Find the Perfect NameThis book even has lists divided by type, so there are many options for ways to choose in here. I really like this!

pennypinchingpeach's avatarPenny Pinching Peach

First Birthday

Three out of five members of our family have birthdays coming up in the next three weeks, and I’m already seeing some of the fun free stuff we are going to get in this year. There are alot of birthday freebies out there, and many of them have perks all year long. I’ve seen alot of them, but haven’t take advantage of them all. Some are not in my area, others I’m not interested in, some I just wouldn’t use. I’m only sharing a dozen of the birthday freebies I’ve actually signed up for, used myself and liked, so I can vouch for them. I’m aware of alot more, and plan to sign up for a few new ones I discovered while looking up these links to share with you, so I’ll probably update this list in the future to share some new favorites. I hope you enjoy these…

Paper Plate Pumpkin Masks

Paper Plate Pumpkin Masks

Paper Plate Pumpkin Masks

Need an inexpensive and easy fall craft for kids? Try my upcycled paper plate pumpkin masks!

I try to do a craft of some sort at least once or twice a week with my children, mostly using items we have on hand or that will cost me very little to get the supplies for. This was one of our recent projects, using only items I already had in my cabinets. These masks were pretty quick to pull together, as well as lots of fun for my little ones to help make and play with when they were finished. If you need a simple and cheap autumn craft for children, this is for you!

Want to know how to make your own paper plate pumpkin mask? Keep reading!

Pumpkin Mask Supplies

Pumpkin Mask Supplies

First, gather your supplies. In case the photo isn’t enough explanation, here’s your crazy long list of things you need:

Yep, that’s it! Think you can handle that? 😉

Next, let your kiddos color the middle round part of the plate orange (or another color, if they’re feeling funky). Cut the round center part of the plate out.

Hold the cut out near your child’s face and put a dot on the plate where the eyes and mouth should go, then draw the shapes they want them to be. I scored the lines with my scissors and then went back over them with a knife to cut them the rest of the way out.

Poke a hole in each side of the pumpkin mask for the ribbon to go through. Have your child hold the mask up and then wrap the ribbon around from hole to hole to figure the length. You can do the strap one of two ways. Either two pieces of ribbon you tie on (my choice) or one solid piece they slide on and off their heads. I wrapped it behind and added enough length to tie through the holes as well as tying a bow in the back, which was a few extra inches. Cut and tie the ribbon through the holes.

Cheap Carriers For Babywearing

Wear Your Baby

Babywearing is a must for the busy mom!

I have always been a babywearer, but a baby carrier is an absolute necessity now that I have three small children!

“Penny Pinching Peach is a participant in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program, an affiliate advertising program designed to provide a means for sites to earn advertising fees by advertising and linking to Amazon.com”

I used my Moby Wrap and cheap soft structured carrier with my youngest daughter daily for the first several months, a water sling (I have this one Breathable Baby Carrier with Polyester and Quickdry Fabrics Material, From Germany Design Swing Slings to New Baby Sling Product, indoor Outdoor Travel Cotton Comfort Safety Newborn Infant Child Baby Sling Carrier Dark Blue, and it only cost me $14.69!!) to be able to take a shower without someone killing her and another bargain sling for quick carries. I wrap her in my DIY carrier occasionally, and will do more when it gets cooler. I use my Lillebaby the most, which I will go into more detail about below.

Without her in a carrier, it would be very difficult for me to do the many chores I have to do inside or outside, chase my munchkins around the playground or go anywhere with all three of my small children. Babywearing is a lifesaver for me, but I am not able to afford the expensive carriers we all drool over. All of mine were either used, a gift or deeply discounted. I love babywearing, but my purse is light, like most of you who read this blog. 🙂

I came across a wonderful selection of a variety of cheap carriers on Amazon, and had to share my favorite babywearing bargains with y’all!

I haven’t tried most of these carriers, so you’ll need to look into whether it suits your personal needs or not. I’m only sharing carriers that are priced at around $35 or less when I am looking now, but am not responsible for changes in pricing.  I’m hoping the ones I’m sharing will help someone else be able to afford something nice to wear your baby in!

You Can Wear Your Baby!

You Can Wear Your Baby!

Slings for wearing baby…

Lightly Adjustable Baby Ring Sling Carrier Wrap is a simple option in a nice neutral color for a very cheap price.
Baby Ring Sling Wrap Carrier Grey Rainbow is a beautiful, classy choice that will still appeal to the budget conscious.

Soft structured carriers…

Infantino Flip Front 2 Back Carrier, Black is priced at under $20. This looks pretty versatile, and I’ve seen it recommended as a decent budget carrier.
Evenflo Natural Fit Soft Carrier, Khaki Orange looks like a nice option for wearing your baby at a price that won’t break the bank.
Infantino Breathe Vented Carrier, Grey is also under $20 at the moment. It looks really lightweight and airy.
I have to mention a budget buster, because I use mine daily and it is the most comfortable thing ever! The cheaper version is still above the budget we are talking about here, but it is the Lillebaby Essentials LILLEbaby 4 in 1 ESSENTIALS Baby Carrier – Grey Chevron. I have the Lillebaby Airflow pictured in the collage, and I literally wear it almost daily! It’s amazing! I bought it with coupons and birthday money, but it’s a worthwhile splurge, regardless. This LILLEbaby – The COMPLETE Airflow (Charcoal/Berry) is the one I have for my little chunk of cuteness, and I love that I can even use it for my 4 year old as needed!

Stretchy wrap style baby carriers…

Moby Wrap Baby Carrier, Cafe/Choco is a definite worthwhile steal! I have a Moby my doctor gave me, and I absolutely love it! I used it pretty much daily for the first few months, and it’s so soft and comfortable for me and my littlest! This one is marked down to under $25 and it’s so worth it!
JJ Cole Agility Stretch Carrier, Black, Small appears to be similar to a Moby, which I love for my daughter! I’ve heard these stretchy wraps are not comfortable as your baby gets much past 20 lbs., but I didn’t have one of these with my older children and can’t comment on that personally. It’s a similar, but different, affordable option.

Miscellaneous baby carriers…

Sash Wrap and Tie Baby Carrier is the famous mei tai style carrier. It’s like a hybrid between a wrap and a soft structured carrier. It’s the highest recommended carrier for mamas on a tight budget, so that is saying a lot for it!
CuddleBug 3-in-1 Mei Tai Carrier With Hood is a similar style mei tai that I have also seen highly recommended. I think the name is adorable, for the record!

Does anyone out there wear their babies? I’m really hoping this will help someone get a carrier they were seriously needing!!
